GENERIKA banked on the trio of Gen Casugod, Shaya Adorador, and Chloe Cortez in the fourth to carry out a tough 28-26, 26-28, 25-20, 25-19 victory over Standard Insurance Navy on Tuesday in the Philippine Super Liga All Filipino Conference at The Arena in San Juan.
Coming off two closely contested sets, UST stalwart Ria Meneses carried the fight for the Life Savers especially in the third when she pushed their lead to 16-11 and never looked back.
The Corvettes, however, threatened in the fourth set, slicing a big deficit down to four, 11-15. But this is when Casugod, a former Far Eastern University middle blocker and Cortez of the UST Tigresses took over with some tough defense as the Life Savers widened the gap, 19-11, and sealed the win.
Cortez finished with 17 points, Adorador had 14 and Casugod added 13 for Generika, which had five players in double figures. Wensh Tiu chipped in 11 markers while Meneses scored 10.
Generika coach Francis Vicente was pleased with his wards, particularly with the consistent showing of Cortez.
“Lagi ganyan ‘yan sa ensayo kahit sa practice game,” said the veteran mentor. “Aggressive, walang keme keme, basta siya laro lang enjoy siya sa laro, walang arte arte ‘yan eh kaya ganyan ang laro niya.”
Vicente admitted that he initially struggled in forming a cohesive unit out of players coming from different schools and backgrounds.
“Ang nakaka-challenge dyan paano mo bubuuin ang team kasi iba ibang mentors ang pinanggalingan nila, iba ibang schools,” he said.
“Ang challenge is kung paano sila mabubuo na maging isang philosophy and isang goal ang mangyayari,” he added.
The veteran coach, though, was glad to see his team making progress on their chemistry, which showed in the balanced attack orchestrated by Rubie De Leon with all of the squad's 34 excellent sets against Navy.
“Kailangan eh, they have to complement each other. Andyan na ‘yan, ‘di ka pwede magreklamo kasi magreklamo ka sa akin, ‘di ka magaling na athlete,” said Vicente.
“Mixture of youth and veteran leader inside the court, ‘yun ang nagbigay daan sa tagumpay namin,” he added.
Paulina Soriano led Navy with 10 points.
Generika is currently tied with opening-game day winners F2 Logistics and Petron, while the Corvettes are at the lower half of the standings along with Cignal and Foton.
