IMUS CITY — Generika-Ayala banked on the troika of Angeli Araneta, Fiola Ceballos and Patty Orendain to take down giant Foton, 22-25, 26-24, 25-19, 25-16 for its second straight win in the Philippine Superliga All-Filipino Conference on Thursday at the Imus Sports Center.
Araneta, Ceballos and Orendain lifted the Lifesavers from a first-set loss before upsetting the Tornadoes powered by the towering sisters Dindin Santiago-Manabat and Jaja Santiago.
Araneta delivered the punishing blows to Foton and put up game-high 21 points off 17 kills and four service aces giving Generika-Ayala an improved 2-1 win-loss record.
Ceballos nailed the back-to-back winning aces for the Lifesavers and had 19 points on top of 17 digs, while Orendain had 18 markers.
“Sabi naman namin focus lang sa service receive talagang pag sumabay kami sa laki ng Foton talagang walang panalo,” said Generika-Ayala head coach Sherwin Meneses. “Mabuti gumana yung service receive kaya nakakuha ng panalo.”
The Lifesavers fired 13 aces and banked on their floor defense led by libero Kath Arado, who had 34 digs and 18 excellent receptions to overcome the tall Tornadoes, who had 12 blocks.
After losing the opening set, the Lifesavers fought their way back from a 21-23 deficit capped by Araneta’s attack to force a deuce, 24-all, before Ceballos delivered a block on Dindin Santiago-Manabat and the set-clinching hit to equalize the match at one set apiece.
But Generika-Ayala used the momentum to take control of the remainder of the match, building an 18-11 lead in the fourth set but Manabat trimmed it to just three for Foton. Araneta came to the rescue to pullaway with a 23-15 lead before Ceballos delivered the match-winning aces.
“Sabi ko sa kanila, hindi na sila bata sa laro kailangan nila magbigay ng puntos pag kinakailangan kasi mga senior na rin sila,” said Meneses on Araneta and Ceballos.
Manabat played her best PSL game since returning from Japan with 19 points. Jaja Santiago and Mina Aganon added 14 and 13 points, respectively as Foton dropped to 1-1 card with idle Sta. Lucia
Foton will be back in Imus on Saturday facing fellow leader F2 Logistics, led by new recruit Kalei Mau.
