GENERIKA-Ayala defeated Cignal, 25-22, 25-20, 25-20, to end the elimination round of the Philippine Super Liga Grand Prix on a high note on Thursday at The Arena in San Juan.
Import Darlene Ramdin from Trinidad and Tobago scored 17 points for the Life Savers, who improved to 3-7, tied with the HD Spikers.
Generika-Ayala finishes in the No. 7 spot and will face No. 2 Petron in the quarterfinals.
The Blaze Spikers, who defeated the Life Savers in straight sets in their first round meeting, are armed with a twice-to-beat advantage.
“Ready kami para sa quarterfinals so magandang baon ’to para sa Saturday, tumaas ang kumpyansa ng team kahit kaunti kasi team-to-beat talaga ang Petron,” said Generika-Ayala coach Sherwin Meneses.
“Pero bilog ang bola, parehas naman may import,” he added. “Twice-to-beat mabigat ’yun pero one game at a time lang pwede ’yun.”
American import Symone Hayden scored 14 and skipper Angeli Araneta added 10 points for the Life Savers.
Cignal import Sonja Milanovic left with a right ankle injury late in the first set.
American reinforcement Stiix Horton led Cignal with 19 points, nine digs and 20 excellent receptions in the one hour and 30-minute match.
Sixth-seed Cignal will be up against third-seed Cocolife, which holds a twice-to-beat advantage.
