GENERIKA-Ayala flirted with disaster before eking out a 25-23, 25-20, 20-25, 22-25, 15-12 victory over Cignal for its fourth straight win in the Philippine Superliga All-Filipino Conference on Thursday at the Natalio G Velez Sports & Cultural Center in Silay City.
The Lifesavers blew a two-set lead as the HD Spikers, led by Rachel Anne Daquis and Mylene Paat, forced a fifth set that started at 5-all.
Patty Orendain lifted Generika-Ayala to pull away, scoring six of the next seven points for a 11-6 breather only for the HD Spikers to rally with a 6-3 run to trim it within two but Fil-Am setter Alohi Robins-Hardy halted their comeback with a crucial service error allowing the Lifesavers to escape with its fourth straight win in five outings.
Orendain led the team’s collective effort with 18 points on top of 11 excellent receptions. Skipper Angeli Araneta had 17 points. Fiola Ceballos put up 11 points including 16 digs, while Ria Meneses also had 11 markers.
Libero Kath Arado was also sensational with 31 digs and 14 excellent receptions as Generika-Ayala rose at the second seed with an improved 4-1 win-loss record behind unbeaten F2 Logistics (6-0).
Daquis showed a vintage form with 20 points laced with 17 digs and nine excellent receptions. Paat had 15 hits, while Ranya Musa added 10 markers.
Libero Jheck Dionela had 21 digs and 10 excellent receptions while Robins-Hardy dished out 30 excellent only for the HD Spikers to suffer their third straight loss with a 2-3 card.
