Foton calls for PSL probe into 'biased judgments, irregularities' in loss to Petron

    Jul 28, 2017

FOTON took to social media to vent its frustration through an open letter over what it felt were 'biased judgments' by two officials as well as 'irregularities' in the recent Philippine Super Liga game.

Through its official Facebook page, Foton posted a video that's almost 13 minutes long from its knockout semifinal match against Petron on July 6 in the recently concluded All-Filipino Conference.

The video raised three issues involving first referee Jocelyn del Rosario and second referee Lumer Pajarillo that the team said it wanted to clarify.

In an accompanying protest letter signed by Foton team owner Rommel Sytin, the PSL team said that after a review of the game video, it felt the calls 'were biased' and meant to distract our players for them to lose focus and to stop the momentum of the team.'

Foton released the video on Wednesday to stress the following points:

    * 1st referee called Jaja Santiago at the service line to give (a) yellow card to the team because of delaying from substitution. It should have done (so) before Jaja went to the service line.

    * The referee keeps on calling Jaja Santiago because of (the Foton players) raising their hand during blocking position but (players of) Petron kept doing the same thing but (were) ignored by the first referee.

    * 1st referee whistle for the Petron service while the second referee signal for the substitution of Maika Ortiz and Jen Reyes. (During this play, Aiza Maizo-Pontillas’ service went out but Foton was called for a positional fault while Foton coach Moro Branislav was still deciding whether to ask for a challenge of the previous play in the third set)

    * The 2nd referee went all the way to the Foton bench after the Petron’s timeout to tell them to fix the board. At this point Foton was leading 6-3 in the fourth set. (The match female commentator was heard saying, “(the referee) was just reminding 'yung bench ng Foton to stay within their designated area) Shang Berte’s service went straight to the net and Branislav was obviously infuriated and was given a red card.

    * Foton’s last point was about a call on Berte and Ivy Perez’s toss on different plays while Foton was ahead by five on both situations - 13-8, on Berte and, 17-12, on Perez. “Calling catch and throw/lifting to Shang Berte and Ivy Perez, where they both get the ball overhead.”

Saying it felt an 'injustice' was done to the team, Foton called for a league investigation so the five-year-old league can find ways to improve officiating in future conferences.

The club also called for 'transparency' in the league's affairs.

“We believe that in order for both ends to achieve these, we must be equitable and transparent in all aspects,” the club said in the protest letter.
