THE battle for the second outright semifinals berth heats up as Shopinas, Foton and Philips Gold figure in crucial matches in the 2015 Philippine Superliga women's volleyball tournament All-Filipino Conference returns to Alonte Sports Arena in Binan City on Saturday.
Petron, which has secured the first semifinal spot, looks to extend its unbeaten run to nine as it takes on Mane ‘N Tail, which is just one notch above the cellar at 2-5, in the 4:30 p.m. match.
Foton (3-4) and Philips (4-4) clash at 2:30 p.m., while Shopinas and Cignal battle in the 6:30 p.m. match.
Several matches remain in the second round, with the Clickers, Tornadoes and Slammers still capable of joining the Blaze Spikers in the semis early.
The teams that wind up in third to sixth places battle in the sudden-death quarterfinals round set at the Quezon Convention Center in Quezon Province next weekend.
The Lady Slammers are coming off back-to-back wins and coach Francis Vicente is confident the squad led by Michele Gumabao and Myla Pablo can extend the streak to three as they face the skidding Tornadoes.
“Masaya ako sa jelling, naglalaro na sila ng buo, ’yung as a team na sila,” he said.
Foton, meanwhile, is looking to stop the bleeding after suffering three consecutive losses following the loss of former Ateneo star Dzi Gervacio, who suffered an anterior cruciate ligament tear in their first-round encounter against Philips Gold.
The Tornadoes hope to get big numbers from young stars Nicole Tiamzon, Angeli Araneta, Pam Lastimosa and veteran Patty Orendain.
