FOTON gained a share of the lead in the Philippine Super Liga All-Filipino Conference, defeating Smart, 26-24, 25-15, 25-19, on Tuesday at The Arena in San Juan.
Mina Aganon scored 13 points and had 13 digs, while team captain Maika Ortiz had 11 markers for the Tornadoes, who remained unbeaten after four matches, tied with Petron.
“Actually, even before this is our so called mantra sa team namin, wala kaming expectations,” said Foton coach Aaron Velez. “We just have to see what we can contribute and at the same time deliver what we have to do.”
The win was costly, however, as Arriane Layug hurt her left knee during an awkward landing in the first set.
“Mixed emotions kasi panalo tapos may mga nakapag deliver from the bench, however, hindi pa rin naman mawawala sa isip namin si Arriane,” he said.
“No. 1 naman eh, as an athlete and as a coach, titignan mo parati ang welfare ng mga players mo,” he added.
Jerrili Malabanan and Aiko Urdas each had eight points for Smart, which slid to 1-2.
The Giga Hitters, who absorbed their second straight loss, missed top hitter Grethcel Soltones due to flu.
