BIÑAN CITY — Freshman skipper Lycha Ebon led the rookie-laden Far Eastern University in sweeping De La Salle-Dasmariñas, 25-21, 25-16, 25-11, to jumpstart its Philippine Superliga College Grand Slam campaign on a high note on Saturday at the Alonte Sports Center.
Ebon, FEU’s top recruit from Davao, had an impressive PSL debut hitting 11 kills for 12 points as the Lady Tamaraws made short work of the Lady Patriots in 65 minutes.
“Napakaswerte ng FEU na napunta si Lycha Ebon,” said FEU head coach Rey Diaz as the rookie made an impressive PSL debut.
“Sana lang wag lumaki yung ulo niya, wag siyang magbago. Kasi hindi nagugulat na ganyan lalaruin niya kasi sa training all-out, sa game all-out talagang. Napaka gandang attitude as a student-athlete.”
Other rookies shone with France Ronquillo delivering seven spikes and two blocks for nine hits and Jamaica Pascua adding seven markers, while making 11 excellent receptions.
Senior players Ivana Agudo and Jerrili Malabanan had seven and six points, respectively.
“Masaya para doon sa mga first year na mabilis sila makapagadjust,” Diaz said.
“Pero siyempre as a coach titignan mo parang ang layo ng nilaro nila doon sa ineensayo pero ineexpect naman namin yun kasi ang composition naman namin almost seventy to eighty percent rookies. Pero as rookies magandang outcome pa rin kasi nakaadjust sila,” he added.
The Lady Tams dominated the Lady Patriots in all departments, especially in attacking with a huge 43-20 differential as well as in blocking (5-0) and service aces (8-4).
De La Salle-Dasma committed 24 errors and nobody scored in double figures, with Rain Cyrille Ramos scoring seven and Mara Allyza Galicia delivering six points.
FEU eyes its second win against UAAP rival UST (1-0) next Saturday at Caloocan Sports Complex, while La Salle-Dasma takes on UE (0-1) on November 24.
