EXTRA work in practice paid off for Foton star EJ Laure after her all-around performance in the Tornadoes’ five-set win over Generika-Ayala in the Philippine Super Liga All-Filipino Conference on Thursday at The Arena in San Juan.
Skipper Jaja Santiago led the scoring with 26 points but the outside hitter from University of Santo Tomas put on a show with 20 points, 18 of which came from spikes, 11 digs and 12 excellent receptions in Foton’s 19-25, 20-25, 25-18, 25-15, 15-7 victory.
“Siguro lahat ‘yun nag-pay off ang mga hirap ko sa training,” shared Laure, who was unaware of her game stats.
The 19-year-old spiker bared that helping the team defensively was one of her priorities as she wanted to become a reliable player from the back row.
“Syempre noong UAAP kasi ,wala akong depensa, wala rin akong receieve, so parang dito sa PSL ‘yun ‘yung fino-focus ko talaga,” she said.
But Laure is bracing for a tougher challenge in their match against powerhouse Petron on Saturday.
Familiarity will play a big role as Foton’s former players - outside hitter Sisi Rondina, Laure’s teammate at UST, and seasoned setter Rhea Dimaculangan - moved to Petron during the offseason.
“Siguro ‘di mawawala ‘yun (na babantayan ako) kasi kami ni Ate Jaja ang gumagawa, so ine-expect ko naman na babantayan nila ako lalo na sa Saturday,” said Laure, who added that she’s up to the challenge.
“Oo naman kasi gagawin ko lahat para manalo ang team so I’ll do my best,” she said.
