IMUS City — Assistant coach Edjet Mabbayad has been named interim coach as Foton on Tuesday confirmed it has parted ways with Rommel Abella.
Foton has been without Abella for three matches, with Mabbayad calling the shots for the Tornadoes in the Philippine Super Liga Invitational Conference.
“Yes, we appointed Edjet as interim coach,” said team owner Rommel Sytin.
Abella was appointed on December 28 last year, replacing Serbian mentor Moro Branislav, who moved to Cocolife.
Foton had high expectations for the Invitationals with the addition of University of the East top hitter Shaya Adorador, NCAA beach volley champion Nieza and Jeziela Viray of San Beda and Ateneo star Bea de Leon.
But the Tornadoes absorbed three straight losses to F2 Logistics, Generika-Ayala and Petron in the pool stage, before beating University of the Philippiness-UAI.
“The team is playing at the lowest level and we feel that there’s a need for change,” said Sytin.
Foton will play in a battle for seventh place on Thursday against the winner of the match between Cocolife and University of the Philippines-UAI.
