PETRON overcame a sluggish start to edge Shopinas, 21-25, 20-25, 25-21, 25-16, 15-9, on Monday in the 2015 Philippine Superliga women's volleyball tournament All-Filipino Conference at the Cuneta Astrodome.
Dindin Santiago-Manabat came up with a gem of a performance as she spearheaded the Petron assault in the third and fourth sets to keep the Blaze Spikers unscathed in three matches, while the Clickers fell to 2-2.
Santiago-Manabat had 22 kills and a block to lead all scorers with 23 points, Aby Marano finished with 14 points while Daquis had 10 markers for Petron.
“Diesel ang naikarga instead na gasolina kaya naging mabagal ang simula namin,” said Petron coach George Pascua.
“But it’s okay. At least na-overcome namin at lumabas ang composure at character ng team. I told them that they were the champions last conference and they have to show that they are the team to beat in this league.”
After a sluggish and error-filled start, Petron finally displayed its championship form with Manabat peppering the defense with booming smashes both from the back row and the front court.
The Blaze Spikers easily erected an eight-point lead in the fourth set, 16-8, to extend the game to a deciding fifth set.
"We have been practicing this kind of situation, so the girls already know what to do," said Pascua following the hard-earned win that lasted for two hours and 16 minutes to complete. "Kahit down kami ng two sets, kampante ako na kaya nilang habulin ang kalaban."
Cha Cruz delivered 17 points while Stephanie Mercado scored 12 points for the Lady Clickers, who played with assistant coach Benson Bocboc filling in for head coach Ramil de Jesus in the inter-club tournament organized by Sports Core and backed by Asics, Mikasa, Senoh, Mueller Sports Medicine, Via Mare, LGR and Healthway Medical.
