Rachel Anne Daquis hopes local core of F2 Logistics be kept intact for SEA Games

Jaja Santiago hits a spike against Bangkok Glass in the classification match.

PSL-F2 Logistics Manila skipper Rachel Anne Daquis said she wishes the local players of the team that competed in the FIVB Women’s Club World Championship will be retained for the 2017 Southeast Asian Games.

Although the home team went without a win in five games and settled for the eighth spot after a 16-25, 23-25, 20-25 loss to Bangkok Glass, Daquis said keeping the local unit that also included Jovelyn Gonzaga, Jaja Santiago, Mika Reyes, Kim Fajardo, Ces Molina and Jen Reyes could kick-start the national team program.

“Umaawit nga kami sa officials na sana ‘wag kaming buwagin,” said Daquis. “Kumbaga dagdagan na lang  kami ng ibang mga players pa na magfi-fill in doon sa team na ‘yun," she said. "Kasi naumpisahan na namin eh, so naisip namin na sana magtuluy-tuloy na sa SEA Games.”

PSL-F2 Logistics Manila's locals shining moment came in a valiant effort against defending champion Eczacibasi VitrA Istanbul, when they played together and built a five-point lead, 12-7, against a Turkish team that fielded its national team.

The team eventually lost to Eczacibasi VitrA Istanbul, 17-25, 17-25, 25-23, 14-25, but the won set was a first for the Philippines in the world stage.

The locals, especially setter Fajardo and middle blocker Santiago, also drew praise from international coaches.

“Ipinakita namin ang capability ng mga Pilipino na kaya natin lumaban,” said Daquis. “So ang kailangan natin is chance, chance na makapaglaro and mabuo ng mas maaga para mas maging maganda ng resulta.

“At saka alam ko din nagging eye-opener ‘to eh, na ‘kaya pala natin lumaban so sana ayun, namulat lahat,” she added.

Gonzaga is hoping that although it fell short, the team has inspired the younger generation of athletes to never stop dreaming and always give their best.

“Ganoon din ako before, ganoon din kami before, isa kami sa mga nangangarap lang pero pinagpursigihan talaga namin hanggang sa makamit namin ang pangarap namin, pinaghirapan namin,” said the opposite spiker.

“Siguro ‘yun ang mase-share namin sa mga bata ang maging inspiration sa kanila, na never stop dreaming and samahan ng pagpupursige at pagtatiyaga and mararating mo kung ano ang pangarap mo,” she added.
