THE Gilligan’s pair of Danika Gendrauli and Norie Jane Diaz booked the last quarterfinals ticket in the PLDT Home Ultera Philippine Super Liga Beach Volleyball Challenge Cup as it turned back Fille Cainglet-Cayetano and Alexa Micek of Petron Sprint 4T, 18-21, 21-17, 15-9, Saturday night at the Sands By The Bay.
Gilligan's joins Foton Hurricane (2-1) in the next round in Pool D of the meet powered by Smart Live More.
No thanks to their monthly period, Gendrauli and Diaz had a bad start and lost the opening set, but were able to recover their bearings to pull off the come-from-behind win.
“Ina-adjust lang namin kasi meron kaming dalawa ngayon,” admitted Gendrauli.
“Tyaga lang talaga at dapat mag-usap kaming dalawa sa loob ng court,” added the former Southwestern University standout.
In Pool A, Samantha Dawson and Marleen Cortel of Amy's downed Aileen Abuel Rossan Fajardo of Philips Gold, 21-18, 21-12, although both teams are already assured of advancing to the quarterfinals.
Fiola Ceballos and Patty Orendain of Foton Tornadoes survived the strong the rain and wind to eke out a 21-14, 15-21, 17-15, win over Jem Gutierrez and Jusabelle Brillo of Meralco in Pool C.
“Sonrang hirap kasi yung bola (hinahangin),” said Ceballos of having to play under tough conditions.
“'Yung set namin pumapasok sa kabila (na court) kasi 'yung hangin sobrang lakas kaya binabaan namin ang set para 'wag hanginin and mabilis na plays lang ginawa namin,” she added.
Foton Tornadoes and Meralco, however, will also enter the quarterfinals.
Cha Cruz and Micmic Laborte of Cignal A bagged their first win in the elimination as they dominated Bea Tan and Pau Soriano of Foton Hurricane, 25-23, 21-14, in Pool D.
But Foton Hurricane (2-1) will advance to the quarterfinals, leaving Cignal A in a tie with Petron Sprint 4T with similar 1-2 records.
