CIGNAL completed a first-round sweep in the Philippine Superliga Invitationals as it annihilated Sta. Lucia, 25-18, 25-23, 25-14, on Tuesday at the Sta. Rosa Multi-purpose Sports Complex in Laguna.
The HD Spikers have yet to drop a single set through three games in Pool A after taking down the Lady Realtors in one hour and 20 minutes.
It was Mylene Paat’s time to shine for Cignal, this time, as the national team spiker delivered 12 points off nine kills, a pair of aces and a block.
Rachel Anne Daquis led the team’s second-set comeback from a 16-22 deficit and finished with 10 points and 16 digs.
“Yung second set namin kasi sabi naming lahat hindi kami pwede maging complacent kasi lahat ng kalaban namin magagaling,” Daquis said. “Doon nagising na hindi kami pwede matalo kasi every game sobrang importante.”
Daquis and Gonzaga led a run of seven unanswered points that gave Cignal the lead, 23-22. Joy Dacoron committed a net touch and got blocked by Roselyn Doria, allowing the HD Spikers to take a two-set lead.
As Cignal matched Sta. Lucia’s 22 errors, Daquis warned Cignal must clean up its act in the second round where it will join Petron, PLDT and Marinerang Pilipina in Pool C, with the top two squads advancing to the knockout semifinals.
Pam Lastimosa was the lone Lady Realtor to score in double figures as Sta. Lucia absorbed its second straight defeat, finishing with 1-2 win-loss record in their group just like Foton and PLDT.
Sta. Lucia will be grouped in Pool D with F2 Logistics, Generika-Ayala and Foton.
