CIGNAL survived a huge scare in the fourth set from Generika-Ayala, 25-16, 25-21, 25-27, 25-21, in the Philippine Super Liga Grand Prix on Thursday at The Arena in San Juan.
After winning the first two sets, the HD Spikers dropped the third and nearly blew an 18-10 lead in the fourth as the Life Savers came storming back to within one point, 21-22.
But Cignal scored the next three points behind Rachel Anne Daquis, a block by Australian Beth Carey on Generika import Darlene Ramdin and a smart play by Jovelyn Gonzaga to end the treat.
The Invitational Conference champions bounced back from an opening loss to Petron while dealing Generika-Ayala its second loss in three games.
American import Alexis Mathews finished with 19 points, including five blocks, for the HD Spikers while Jovelyn Gonzaga added 17 with four blocks. Australian reinforcement Beth Carey added 16.
Despite the win, Cignal coach George Pascua insisted the team is still far from top form.
“Hindi pa (perfect) kasi dapat ang team chemistry (nandoon na),” he said.
Croatian import Katarina Pilepic had 25 points for Generika-Ayala while Ramdin added 23.
