IMPORTS Erica Wilson and Ana Artemeva and skipper Rachel Anne Daquis powered Cignal in taking down PLDT Home Fibr, 25-16, 25-23, 17-25, 25-18, in Philippine Superliga Grand Prix on Tuesday at the Arena in San Juan City,
Wilson, once again, led the charge for the HD Spikers with 27 points off 22 kills, four service aces and a block, while her fellow reinforcement Artemeva chipped in 17 spikes, three blocks and an ace for 21 hits to force a share of the third place with the Power Hitters tied with 7-6 win-loss records.
But for Cignal head coach Edgar Barroga, Daquis was the difference maker as she shared the spotlight with 14 markers on top of 18 excellent receptions.
“Si Rachel nagstep up lumabas yung receive niya at the same time yung leadership niya bumalik. Palagay ko yun yung isang factor kung bakit naging maganda yung laro namin,” Barroga said.
The HD Spikers had an impressive first two sets before stumbling in the third frame that allowed the Power Hitters to force another set. But the troika of Wilson, Artemeva and Daquis caught fire in the fourth set building a 21-12 spread only for PLDT to score five straight points to cut it down to just four, 21-17.
Daquis stopped the bleeding before Wilson scored the finishing touches that boost their bid in getting a twice-to-beat advantage heading into the quarterfinals.
“Kung naibigay namin yung panalo sa kanila delikado na kami sa top four kaya pinagaralan namin ng husto yung laro nila para makalamang kami,” Barroga said.
The HD Spikers and Power Hitters have to win their respective last games to seal the twice-to-beat incentives with Cignal facing F2 Logistics (8-3) on Thursday next week, while PLDT takes on United Volleyball Club (5-5) this Thursday.
Kendra Dahlke lifted PLDT with 20 points, while fellow import Grace Lazard added 12 markers. Grethcel Soltones played her best game this conference with 11 points laced up with 19 excellent receptions and 13 digs in a losing cause.
