CIGNAL coach Sammy Acaylar sees a bright future ahead for his team with College of St. Benilde standouts Jeanette Panaga, Jannine Navarro and Djanel Cheng on board.
The Lady Blazers impressed the veteran mentor as they delivered in the HD Spikers’ five-set win over Petron, 18-25, 25-13, 25-19, 20-25, 15-12, in the PLDT Home Ultera Philippine Super Liga Invitational Conference at Imus Sports Complex on Tuesday.
Panaga was solid at the net, coming up with eight of the team’s 12 blocks for a total of 18 points, while Navarro contributed 16 points and Cheng, who registered 17 of the team’s 31 excellent sets, sealed the win for Cignal with her back-to-back service aces.
The CSB trio has already played for Cignal in last year’s Grand Prix and Acaylar is looking on a long-term project with the college standouts.
“This is a one-year program. Sabi ko sa management, promising team kahit mga bata and pang national caliber,” said the veteran mentor.
“All I have to do is to train sila, tyaga lang ‘yan (ang the result will follow),” he added.
Acaylar also mentioned that he prefers unheralded college players rather than the more popular players.
“Hindi kasi ako kumukuha ng star kasi mahirap kumuha ng super star. Pagsabihan mo [kasi] ikaw pa masama,” he said.
The HD Spikers remained in contention for the final round and will face also ran Foton on Thursday.
