PETRON completed a sweep of the elimination round with a 25-11, 23-25, 25-18, 25-19 win over Generika-Ayala on Thursday in the Super Liga Invitational at The Arena in San Juan.
Skipper Ces Molina and Mina Aganon had 13 points apiece as the Blaze Spikers got their fifth win, getting a big boost for the four-team final phase of the tournament.
Petron had earlier secured a spot in the next round along with Cignal (4-1). The third-best local team will advance to the next phase that will feature guest team Kobe Shinwa University of Japan.
The four-team round-robin phase starts on March 30.
“Kami hindi pwede mag-relax and then mas magiging mataas ang level ng competition kasi may dadating pa na Japanese team so mas kailangan mag-all out at magready ng sarili physically at mentally,” said Petron coach Shaq de los Santos.
Focus now turns to the preparations for the next phase, and although De los Santos and his deputy Ian Fernandez could not find a video of Kobe Shinwa University on the internet, they can see the Japanese team play live since Petron will be the last local team to face the Japanese squad.
“Wala kami mahanap sa Youtube na video nila kaya ‘di namin sila ma-scout pero buti na lang kami ang huli nilang kalaban so 'yung mga una nilang laban parang scouting na namin sa kanila,” he said.
Aiza Maizo-Pontillas and Mela Tunay each had eight points for Petron, while CJ Rosario scored seven and Mika Reyes added six points in the two-hour match.
Middle blockers Angeli Araneta and Gan Casugod combined for 21 points for the Life Savers, who dropped to 2-3.
