BOJANA Todorovic impressed on both offense and defense, leading Philips Gold to a 25-19, 21-25, 27-25, 25-23 win over Meralco in the Philippine Super Liga Grand Prix at The Arena in San Juan on Tuesday.
The 24-year old University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA) standout unloaded 23 points to go with seven digs and 11 of the team’s 26 excellent receptions as the Lady Slammers kept Meralco winless through five games.
Myla Pablo added 14 points and Todorovic’s fellow American reinforcement Alexis Olgard added 11 as Philips Gold put a fitting follow-up to a 25-20, 21-25, 16-25, 25-22, 15-12 win over title-holder Petron last week.
“Nagje-jell, hindi nagpi-peak,” said veteran Philips Gold coach Francis Vicente. “Lumapapit na sa pagkakaisa pero may mga miscommunications pa rin ng kaunti kung makikita niyo sa loob.
"Pero mga 25 percent or 10 percent na lang, mabubuo na ang team.”
Looking to close out the match, Philips Gold nearly squandered a seven-point advantage, 20-13, when Meralco won six successive points to get within 19-20 in the fourth set.
Todorovic and Pablo were quick to stop the Power Spikers’ run, 23-20, while Cai Nepomuceno’s cross court hit pushed the Lady Slammers to match point.
Errors by Todorovic and Pablo gave the enemy a glimmer of hope, 23-24, before Olgard shut the lights out on Meralco with the game winner.
“What I can see is we really need to practice na kapag lamang ang kalaban kailangan namin maabutan, tapos ang movements nila na kapag nakikita nilang easy-easy lang ang kalaban nakikisabay sila,” said Vicente.
“Kanina nga may nakita akong ginawa nila nag-eexperiment sila, although it’s a good thing but it’s dangerous kasi sa actual game nila ginagawa, eh we need to win first,” he added.
Philips Gold now carry a 2-1 card for third spot behind Petron (3-2) and undefeated Cignal (3-0).
Liis Kullerkan had 16 points for Meralco while Mika Reyes added 11.
