GENERIKA-Ayala captain Angeli Araneta seeks to bring her team to its first Finals appearance in the Philippine Superliga All-Filipino Conference.
After earning their first bronze medal last year — the franchise’s best finish since returning in 2016, Araneta believes that the Lifesavers have nowhere to go but target a Finals appearance this year.
“Ako talaga gusto ko umabot kami sa finals kasi nakamit na namin yung third so level up naman kami sana sa Finals,” said Araneta, who has been with Generika since 2017.
The 5-foot-10 opposite hitter showed her eagerness when she erupted with 21 points to lift the Lifesavers in taking down Foton in four sets late Thursday night in Imus, Cavite.
“Actually nung warm up pa lang parang I was feeling it e,” said Araneta, who had 17 kills and fired four of the team’s 13 aces. “Pinanghawakan ko na yung feelings na yun kaya simula pa lang maganda na yung ginagalaw namin. Hanggang sa nakakuha kami ng set nagtuloy tuloy so halos lahat naman kami ginawa yung work namin”
The former University of the Philippines lauded their huge win as a total team effort to overcome sisters Dindin Santiago-Manabat and Jaja Santiago of the Tornadoes.
From a bad loss to F2 Logistics on opening day, Generika-Ayala coach Sherwin Meneses made the Lifesavers clicked with Araneta, Fiola Ceballos and Patty Orendain Ria taking care of offense Ria Meneses manning the middle, Jamie Lavitoria dishing out the plays and Kath Arado taking care of floor defense
“Sinabi naman samin ni coach basta lahat lang may kanya kanyang trabaho,” said Araneta. “Nung first game, hindi kami nagtrabaho (ng maayos.Ngayon lahat may contribution and masaya lang kami naglalaro.”
The Lifesavers already won back-to-back matches over Marinerang Pilipina and Foton before taking a week-long break before returning to action against Sta. Lucia (1-1) in Cadiz City on July 2 and Cignal in Silay City on July 4.
It’s still a long way to go for Generika-Ayala in this double-round robin preliminary round but Araneta believes that if this same core of Lifesavers would play consistent they have a strong chance to overachieve and reach the Finals.
“Kung ganyan yung gagalawin namin at kailangan lang namin maging consistent all throughout season. Very important talaga yung namaintain yung core ng team namin,” said Araneta.
