Petron takes solo lead in Super Liga with straight-sets victory over hapless Cignal

    Jun 28, 2016
Aiza Maizo, Bernadeth Pons and the TriActiv Spikers keep their record unblemished.

PETRON survived an error-plagued final stretch to turn back Cignal, 25-14, 25-13, 27-25, and move to the top of the Philippine Super Liga All Filipino Conference on Tuesday at the Cuneta Astodome.

Skipper Aiza Maizo-Pontillas and Ces Molina each had 11 points for the Tri-Activ Spikers, who scored their third win in as many matches.

The defending champions looked to finish the match, 22-18, but a series of unforced errors tied the contest, 24-24.

On the next play, Cignal got a tinge of hope as Molina's attack went wide, 25-24. But Molina made up for her mistake and tied the game, 25-25, before Petron sealed the win with a block on Mela Tunay and an error from Jannine Navarro.

‘’Yung third set ang dami naming unforced errors so ‘yun lang medyo [nag-pakaba] sa akin pero na-manage naman noong huli,” said Tri-Activ Spikers coach George Pascua.

Petron had a better ball distribution with AC Masangkay coming up with 12 of the team’s 18 excellent sets compared to Cignal’s 13, with nine all from Djanel Cheng.

The Tri-Activ Spikers were also more effective from the service line (3-1) and displayed a better defensive strategy with nine blocks against only one of the HD Spikers.

“’Yung passing namin at saka ‘yung service namin, at saka ‘yung blocking ‘yun ang key factors sa pagkapanalo namin,” said Pascua.

Petron gave away 23 points to Cignal courtesy of its errors, but the HD Spikers were more careless with 30 miscues.

Former Far Eastern University standout Cherry May Vivas and University of Santo Tomas alum Mela Tunay each had six markers for the HD Spikers, winless in three outings and tied at the bottom with Amy’s Kitchen.
