DEFENDING champion Petron edged Generika, 25-19, 21-25, 25-22, 27-25, on Saturday to gain a share of the lead in the Philippine Super Liga All Filipino Conference at The Arena in San Juan.
Skipper Aiza Maizo-Pontillas had 17 points, Bernadeth Pons scored 16 and Ces Molina added 14 as the Tri-Activ Spikers registered their second win in as many matches, joining F2 Logistics on top.
Generika managed to deny Pontillas on several plays, but Petron was simply too deep and simply sent the ball to its other hitters, who rose to the occasion.
The TriActive Spikers got some contibutions from Cherry Nunag, Mina Aganon, Iumi Yongco and CJ Rosario.
“Nahirapan kami lalo na sa fourth set pero buti na lang at ang mga bench players ko ang laki ng tulong,” said coach George Pascua.
Shaya Adorador tied it at 25 for Generika but Maizo scored on a powerful cross court attack and Nunag sealed the victory with a quick hit.
AC Masangkay, who had 12 of the team’s 15 excellent sets, had no problem finding other hitters when Maizo was being checked.
“Instruction ko talaga kay AC na hanapin niya ang mas experienced na player pero ibigay na niya kay Nunag kasi nababantayan na si Aiza mabuti at naging effective naman,” said the veteran mentor.
Nunag had four points, Remy Palma scored eight, Yongco and Rosario had three points each and Aganon had two.
Ria Meneses scored 14 points, while Chloe Cortez added 10, Wensh Tiu added nine and Shaya Adorador and Gen Casugod each had eight markers for the Life Savers, who dropped to 1-2.
