ABY Maraño has mostly played with her La Salle coaches and teammates even after college, but now the former Lady Spikers skipper is expanding her horizons by taking a fresh challenge with a new squad.
The former Lady Spiker is ready to spread her wings.
Maraño is teaming up with former rivals as she suits up for Petron in the Philippine Super Liga All-Filipino Conference, and in the process will go up against most of her former Lady Spikers teammates and coach Ramil De Jesus, who will be coaching Shopinas.com this year.
In the PSL Grand Prix, Maraño played under De Jesus at Generika, which bowed to Petron in the title series.
Maraño said she also wants to prove that she has matured as an athlete by playing with a different team.
“This is something new to me,” said Maraño. “I want to grow more as an athlete. Chinallenge ko sarili ko na subukan ’to.”
“I want to show na kahit wala ako sa tabi ni coach, kailangang patunayan ko sa sarili ko na nag-grow na ako as an athlete. Hindi lang ako dumedependa kay coach Ramil, sa mga natutunan ko sa kanya at sa mga teammates ko.”
“Sana maganda ang resulta na mapatunayan ko sa sarili ko na nag-grow na ako,” said Maraño
At Petron, Maraño will be playing with some of the finest volleyball players in the country including Rachel Ann Daquis, former Ateneo Lady Eagle Fille Cainglet-Cayetano, and Dindin Santiago-Manabat, making the Blaze Spikers one of the favorites to win the crown.
The former La Salle star said teaming up with Santiago-Manabat is a dream come true.
“I’m happy kasi pangarap din namin ni Dindin na makapag-laro together,” said Maraño, referring to the former National University spiker who recently got married to current NU Bullpups assistant coach Chico Manabat.
