RACHEL Austero showed the way for College of Saint Benilde as it took down University of Perpetual Help, 24-26, 25-20, 25-13, 25-21, and earned its second straight win in the NCAA Season 94 women’s volleyball tournament on Tuesday at the Arena in San Juan City.
Austero poured 20 points to help the Lady Blazers in improving to a 2-1 win-loss record at third place. Klarisa Abriam and Maritess Pablo made ample contributions delivering 14 and 10 hits, respectively, while playmaker Jewel Lai dished out 27 excellent sets including 10 digs.
After a sluggish start dropping the first set, the Lady Blazers went on a roll to take a 2-1 swt lead and mounted a 18-12 lead in the fourth but the Lady Altas fought back tying it at 19. St. Benilde pulled away with a 23-21 breather before Austero nailed the last two points to get their second straight win since losing their campaign opener to defending champion Arellano last week.
Cindy Imbo carried the load for Perpetual Help with 14 points as the Lady Altas fall to a 1-2 record.
Jose Rizal University, meanwhile, finally barged in win column after defeating Colegio de San Juan de Letran, 25-23, 14-25, 25-15, 25-16.
Mary May Ruiz had an all-around game for JRU to finally end a two-game skid as she scored 18 points on top 20 digs and six excellent receptions. Dolly Versoza finished with 13 points including 25 digs, while Sydney Niegos added 12 markers as the Lady Bombers improved to 1-2 card tied with Letran, Perpetual Help and Lyceum of the Philippines University.
The Lady Knights banked on the troika of Chamberlaine Cunada, Miracle Mendoza and Rhoselle Urriza. Cunada finished with 14 points, while Mendoza and Urriza added 12 and 10 markers, respectively.
St. Benilde and Letran will resume their respective campaigns on Tuesday facing Emilio Aguinaldo College and San Sebastian College, respectively.
JRU and Perpetual Help will take on Mapua University and Lyceum of the Philippines University, respectively, on Monday.
