COLLEGE of St. Benilde made short work of Lyceum, winning in straight sets including a 17-minute blitz in the third, on Thursday in the women’s volleyball tournament of the 88th Season of the NCAA at The Arena in San Juan.

Jannine Navarro and Rossan Fajardo came through with 16 points apiece as the Taft-based spikers won 25-19, 25-22, 25-9.

The Lady Blazers, which last made it to the Finals in 2009, are hoping to regain their contender status again this year.

“Yung mga bata, we came out to a challenge.  Ang pangit ng last year namin.  Binigyan ko sila ng reminder na we have to overcome our eighth place finish,” said Lady Blazers mentor Thelma Barina-Rojas.

“Sobra ang preparations namin for this year. Rebuilding ang team, pero ang maganda sa bata, nakikinig and they follow,” she added.

Jhemil Abadilla had eight points for the Lady Pirates.

Arellano University downed Jose Rizal University, 25-20, 25-10, 25-13, in the other match.

Mary Jane Diane Ticar made seven points, while Menchie Tubiera and Danna Henson added six, respectively, for the Lady Chiefs, who needed only 53 minutes to defuse the Lady Bombers.

Rosalie Pepito and Margarita Tabunda each had seven markers for JRU.

In the juniors’ division, Lyceum thumped La Salle Greenhills, 25-20, 25-18, 22-25, 25-11.

Meko Binas finished with 18 markers for CSB-LSGH while Sean Escallar and Magtangol Dingan IV contributed 14 and 13 points, respectively.
