AIR Force beat Instituto Estetico Manila, 22-25, 25-18, 25-22, 25-23, on Wednesday in the opener of the the Spikers’ Turf Open Conference semifinals at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
Ismail Fauzi scored 18 points, while Rodolfo Labrador added 14 points for the Airmen.
“Nagkanya-kanya ang players, hindi sila naglalaro as a team,” said Air Force mentor Rhovyl Verayo about the first set defeat, while crediting IEM for delivering a fine game.
“Magaling din talaga yung IEM, nagbigay sila ng magandang laban, sabi ko lahat ng team dito magaling, hindi kami pwedeng magkumpiyansa sa next game,” said Verayo.
“Maganda yung depensa nila sa ilalim, kahit na malakas na yung palo namin, natataas pa nila, set play nila maganda tsaka receive. Very strategic yung ginawa nila today,” Verayo added.
The second match is set on Saturday and Verayo is eyeing a sweep.
“Mas maganda matapos naming agad, para mahaba yung pahinga ng mga bata, na wala nang Monday na iisip pa,” Verayo said.
IEM was able to cut down an early 11-6 lead by Air Force in the fourth set to a point, 15-14. Howard Mojica and Labrador kept Air Force ahead before two errors by IEM ended the match.
Karl Dela Calzada and Greg Dolor had 12 points each, while Jason Canlas and Refugia Monolo each contributed 10 points for IEM. Gabriel Pe
