THE Spikers’ Turf, the country’s first-ever men’s volleyball league, rides the crest of its smash-hit maiden staging last May as it holds the Collegiate Conference starting on July 13 with 12 of the country’s top schools clashing for the championship at The Arena in San Juan City.
Reigning NCAA titlist Emilio Aguinaldo College and UAAP champion Ateneo headline the elite two-group field with Far Eastern U, Mapua, National College of Business and Arts, National U and University of the East joining the Generals in Group A.
The Eagles, on the other hand, will be with the Arellano U, College of St. Benilde, De La Salle U, De La Salle U-Dasmariñas and UP-Diliman spikers in Group B.
Fierce action is expected in the three-month long tournament presented by PLDT Home Ultera and backed by Mikasa with the top four teams from each side after a single round robin elims advancing to the quarterfinals.
The eight squads will then play another one-round series as one group although teams that faced off in the elims would no longer meet in the quarters but the results will be carried over in the Last 8 phase. The top four will meet in the crossover best-of-three semifinal playoffs.
The winners will collide for the crown in another best-of-three affair, according to the organizing Sports Vision.
Games will be played Mondays and Wednesdays.
The leading collegiate players led PLDT Home Ultera’s title romp in the Spikers’ Turf inaugural Open Conference but NCAA MVP Howard Mojica of EAC, John Vic De Guzman of St, Benilde, Vincent Mangulabnan of NU, and John Paul Torres of UST, will now become fierce rivals as they head back to their respective schools in pursuit of the first-ever inter-school men’s crown.
Sports Vision is also allowing each school to tap two guest players but only one foreign player.
