Fancy sweets on Valentine's? Lady Spikers have 'Oreo cheesecake' everyday to help them sweat in training
La Salle players have a unique 'Oreo cheesecake' war chant in practices and before games, but insist they aren't craving sweets.

CHANTS of 'Oreo! Oreo! Cheesecake! Cheesecake!' reverberated in the halls of The Arena in San Juan as La Salle's Lady Spikers warmed up for a UAAP women's volleyball game against University of Santo Tomas on Saturday afternoon.

The next time you hear these chants before volleyball games or during La Salle practices, don’t think for a moment that the Lady Spikers are advertising a product. Or perhap craving this sweet, delectable dessert while in training.

While lovers relish sweets on Valentine's Day, the Lady Spikers have them everyday in practices and games. Not actually eat them, but to help pump them up.

“Parang mas napa-pump up ang energy namin kapag maingay kami, ‘yun ‘yung isa sa mga cheer namin,” shared fourth-year opposite spiker Kim Dy when asked about the interesting chant.

Dy shared the 'Oreo cheesecake' chant is actually a long-held tradition in the Lady Spikers camp. It is to the Lady Spikers what haka is to New Zealand athletes, but in a much smaller scale, of course.

“Dati pa noong dumating ako may Oreo at cheesecake na,” said Dy.

Asked what made 'Oreo cheesecake' a part of their war chant, Dy admitted there is simply no explanation. She added the chant is made up of a jumble of words that generations of La Salle players put together over the years.

“Hindi naman namin favorite (kainin) ’yun, wala lang ‘yun,” Dy said. “‘Yung ingay lang talaga namin as a team ang (nagdadala sa team), we can cheer naman whatever we want.”

“May iba pa kaming chant ... It’s like, ‘Hus…’, ‘hus seeyy, one, two, three…’ pero teka, teka," she giggled, stopping short when she was overcome by shyness.

Whatever its origin, the chant seem to work on this day, when the Lady Spikers dominated  the Lady Tigresses, 25-23, 16-25, 25-14, 25-22, to stay unbeaten this season.

The way the Lady Spikers are gobbling up opponents like dessert, don't expect the words from this war chant to be changed anytime soon.
