THE Philippines turned back New Zealand, 25-23, 25-13, 17-25, 25-17, ion Sunday to secure a place in the semifinals of the 19th Princess Cup Southeast Asian Women's Under-19 Volleyball Championship in Sisaket, Thailand.
It was the second straight victory for the Francis Vicente-mentored squad, which overpowered the Singaporeans, 25-9, 25-14, 25-23.
The Philippines, led by National University setter Jasmine Nabor, was set to take on powerhouse Thailand next.
"They quietly trained for this tournament and we're happy with what's been happening," said team manager Peter Cayco, Arellano University’s representative to the NCAA board and a board member of the Larong Volleyball ng Pilipinas, Inc.,
The other group is composed of Vietnam, Indonesia, Australia and Malaysia.
The winner of the Thailand-Philippine match will face the Pool B No. 2 team.
The title match is set on Wednesday.
