ADAMSON University began its campaign with a hard-earned five-set win over National University in the opening match of the 75th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament on Saturday at the Arena in San Juan.
Pau Soriano took charge in the endgame, scoring all but one of Adamson’s last five points to seal a 15-25, 25-15, 25-21, 18-25, 15-10 victory for the Lady Falcons.
Trailing by three, 6-9, in the final set, the Lady Falcons went on a 3-1 mini run to tie the game at 10-all capped by a Shiela Mae Pineda service ace.
Soriano finished with 21 points, on 17 hits and four block points, while Pineda and Amanda Villanueva chipped in 12 and 10, respectively.
Dindin Santiago finished with 23 points for NU and Myla Pablo added 17.
In men’s action, National University defeated Ateneo, 25-19, 25-23, 22-25, 25-18.
Jan Berlin Paglinawan led the Bulldogs with 17 points, including 13 hits and four blocks, while last year’s Best Blocker Reuben Inaudito contributed 15.
Duane Teves, John Joseph Sandoval and Ricci Gonzales had 14 markers apiece for Ateneo.
Earlier, Far Eastern University started its title retention bid with a 22-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-21, 15-12 squeaker over Adamson.
Arvin Avila had 19 markers to lead the Tamaraws, while Ron Jay Galang scored 22 for Adamson.
