SMART-Maynilad made short work of Philippine National Police, 25-14, 25-15, 25-17, to grab the solo lead in the Shakey’s V-League Season 10 Open Conference on Friday at The Arena in San Juan.
Sue Roces’ 21-point output carried the eight-woman team of Roger Gorayeb to its second straight win which it fashioned out in just 63 minutes.
“Nakita na namin noong first game na 'yung dalawang open (hitter) nila ang gumagawa kaya sila na talaga ang pinaghandaan namin," said Smart team captain Rubie de Leon.
Smart limited PNP stalwarts Frances Molina and Janine Marciano to just 13 and 10 points, respectively, after both had 22 points in their debut game last week against Meralco.
Down by two, 13-15 in the second set after de Leon's error, Smart rallied behind a 12-0 run to move to set point.
In the third, Roces took charge and sparked a 6-2 mini run to finally end the agony of the Lady Patrolers, who absorbed their second straight loss (0-2).
Roces had an all around game of 15 points, one block, and five service aces, while Gretchel Soltones added 13 for Smart (2-0).
Despite the easy win, Gorayeb said there is still no definite time when hard-hitting Alyssa Valdez will suit up for Smart.
After Molina and Marciano, no one among the PNP players finished in double figures as Ghileen Labrador only had two points, while Michelle Datuin and Melissa Ogana both had a point each.
