ONE dominant win hardly means anything for Philippine PLDT TVolution skipper Ian Hernandez.
The Power Pinoys waltzed past Mongolia, 25-13, 25-23, 25-16, to start their Asian Men’s Club Volleyball Championship campaign on a bright note on Tuesday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
But Fernandez warned his team not to get carried away from the impressive straight-sets victory that enabled the Filipino spikers to move a step closer to the quarterfinals.
"Medyo mataas ang tinitingala namin dito, dapat lagi kaming gutom," said the 30-year-old University of Santo Tomas product.
After all, sustaining their success in the prestigious tournament would not only benefit the national team team as Fernandez looks at the bigger picture for Philippine volleyball.
"Dapat gutom kami sa mga bago ma naming matututunan at bagong malalaman," he said. "Kasi ito na ang turning point ng volleyball sa Pilipinas, so dapat i-grab na namin ang opportunity."
The Philippine team took only 71 minutes to end the match behind a solid team effort and discipline.
"Sobrang ganda noong game, nakuha namin ng straight sets, lahat ng pinasok nag contribute,' said Fernandez, who finished with three points, including a service ace, all in the third set as the concurrent UST Tigresses assistant coach drew support from his players who watched the game live.
