SHAYA Adorador scored seven points in the fifth set as University of the East upset Adamson University, 25-22, 22-25, 14-25, 25-20, 15-13, on Sunday in the UAAP Season 80 women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
Mary Ann Mendrez had 12 points for UE, while Adorador finished with 11 markers and 13 digs.
The Lady Warriors scored their first win of the season for a 1-6 record, snapping a 13-match losing streak dating to last season’s first round.
“Well kasi noong management asked me to take over, I said that a miracle doesn’t happen overnight. Sabi ko I’ll try my very best, unti-unti lang. Sabi ko sa kanila, hindi natin pipilitin na maging Final Four kaagad,” said interim coach Rod Roque, who took over a week ago.
“Sabi ko importante manalo tayo muna, one goal at a time. Kaya ngayon na nanalo na, may panalo na, nag-umpisa na kami. So siguro next step na kami and move forward,” he added.
UE took a 7-3 lead in the fifth and padded it to 11-5, which was too much for the error-prone Adamson squad to overcome.
Judith Abil had nine points for UE, while Seth Rodriguez added eight in the two-hour and 10-minute match.
UE only has three wins in 49 matches in the last three seasons — all against Adamson.
Paat scored 23 points but the Lady Falcons committed 52 errors that basically handed the Lady Warriors two sets.
Eli Soyud and Joy Dacoron combined for 21 points, while skipper Jema Galanza and Chiara Permentilla, who sat out in the first set along with Soyud, only had nine and eight markers, respectively.
Adamson, which defeated three-peat seeking La Salle in four sets prior to this game, slid to 3-4.
