SHAQ delos Santos has replaced Ramil de Jesus as head coach of the women’s national volleyball team almost two months after the multi-titled mentor’s appointment.
It has been a week since Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas, Inc. officially made Delos Santos as the new head coach who will handle the team that will see action in the Jakarta Palembang Asian Games on August 18, the AVC Asia Cup in September and the 30th Southeast Asian Games next year in Manila.
But the Petron mentor revealed that his appointment came as a surprise after LVPI vice president Peter Cayco sent him a text message.
“Actually last week, Monday, nag-text sa akin si sir Cayco. Then the next day nag-meeting kami and parang mayroon ng appointment na ibinigay sa amin,” said delos Santos.
Delos Santos is coming off a successful Philippine Super Liga campaign where he steered Petron to the PSL Grand Prix crown last month. The PSL is now in its offseason.
Part of his new national team coaching staff are University of Santo Tomas coach Kungfu Reyes and Foton assistant coach Bryan Esquibel.
Still, Delos Santos wanted to clear things out between him and De Jesus, his former mentor at Far Eastern University.
Delos Santos cited that de Jesus, who led La Salle to 11 titles, stepped down before they entered the picture.
The two veteran coaches’ background dates back to 2010 when delos Santos’ UST team defeated de Jesus’ La Salle in the UAAP championship and in 2017 Philippine Super Liga All-Filipino Conference, delos Santos’ Petron, scored a sweet victory on de Jesus’ F2 Logistics.
