NATIONAL team head coach Shaq delos Santos is just excited with the talent of the new women's volleyball pool has as the Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas Inc. (LVPI) laid down the groundwork for what is shaping up to be a busy volleyball schedule this year.
"For sure, magiging maganda dahil maraming dumating na bata na competitive. Healthy competition dito. Maging competitive lahat, ganoon dapat ang mangyari," he said on Thursday.
Delos Santos has an extended pool, with the seniors squad bannered by Alyssa Valdez practicing with the under-23 prospects as LVPI president Peter Cayco aims to make a clear-cut system between the two teams.
"Ang goal is yung system, isa na lang. Yung under-23, definitely pwede mo i-akyat sa national team. Yan ang gusto mangyari nila sir Peter. Sa amin, maganda rin kasi iisa ang sistema. At the same time, nakikita na rin namin yung mga bata na pwedeng maging future ng national team," he said.
A total of 37 players heeded the call in the first day of tryouts, and as of now, Delos Santos said that no one is assured for a spot the teams, not even longtime national team members like Valdez, Aby Marano, or Mika Reyes.
LVPI has yet to set a date for the final cuts.
"Depende na yun sa magiging performance nila until that time na kailangan na namin mag-select ng 14. It doesn't mean na kapag nandyan ka na, di ka na maaalis. Kailangan alagaan mo ang posisyon mo," he said.
