NATIONAL University is on the lookout for a new coach for its women’s volleyball team after Francis Vicente decided not to renew his contract with the Lady Bulldogs.
School athletic director Junel Baculi confirmed Vicente is no longer with the team after his contract ended at the end of March.
"I offered an extension but he declined," said Baculi in an SMS message to Spin.ph. “I’m looking for a replacement right now.”
Edjet Mabbayad, who calls the shots for NU’s men’s team, is currently handling the Lady Bulldogs in an interim capacity in the ongoing Shakey’s V-League.
Vicente didn’t return to the team despite the Lady Bulldogs to a first-ever Final Four appearance last season.
A former Philippine youth team and University of Santo Tomas girls coach, Vicente steered NU to an 8-6 (win-loss) record to finish fourth at the end of the eliminations. The Lady Bulldogs eventually lost to reigning champion La Salle in the semifinals.
Vicente was also successful in recruiting several blue-chip high school players like former UST high school star Dindin Santiago for the Lady Bulldogs.
