SANDUGO-San Sebastian proved too much against an undermanned Ateneo de Manila side, 25-13, 25-20, 25-9, as it moved within reach of a Finals berth in the Shakey’s V-League Open Conference Wednesday night at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
Jeng Baulee came through with 18 points, while Nene Bautista, and Utaiwan Kaensing produced 11 and 10, respectively, for the Lady Stags who led from start to finish.
The top seeded team leads the best-of-three semifinals, 1-0. Another win on Friday will have the Lady Stags advancing to the title series – also a best-of-three.
Sandugo coach Roger Gorayeb however, was quick to downplay the victory.
"Expected naman namin, ganoon talaga kulang ang Ateneo ng players," said the multi-titled coach. "Pero nagpapasalamat kami sa panalo."
Alyssa Valdez finished with 13 markers for the First Conference champion Lady Eagles, who played without three key players.
Ateneo, which came to the Final Four as the no. 4 seed team, missed the services of Fille Cainglet, Bea Tan, and team captain Gretchen Ho due to school examinations.
The Katipunan-based squad will still play incomplete in Game 2, according to Gorayeb, who also happens to be the coach of Ateneo in the UAAP.
