    Nov 28, 2014

GRETCHEL Soltones came through with yet another heroic stand in lifting San Sebastian to a 25-12, 25-18, 17-25, 25-14 victory over Emilio Aguinaldo College in the 90th NCAA women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City Friday.

Soltones unleashed a game-high 28 hits including 27 on attacks to power the Lady Stags to their sixth straight win and grab the solo lead.

“She's our source of strength,” said San Sebastian coach Roger Gorayeb of her prized ward.

Jose Rizal dumped San Beda, 25-16, 25-16, 25-18, to improve to a 3-3 (win-loss) record in the day’s other game.

Meanwhile, football action unfolds Saturday at the Rizal Memorial pitch as reigning three-peat champion San Beda battles Perpetual Help at 8 a.m.

The Lions, who won their third straight championship last year, are the heavy favorites to repeat again this season.

San Beda is also gunning for its 21st championship that will tie the Mendiola-based school with former member school La Salle as the most titled teams in the league’s football history.

Also on tap are the matches pitting Arellano University against Mapua at 10 a.m. and Lyceum versus Emilio Aguinaldo College at 12 noon.
