SAN Sebastian College advanced to the semifinal round as it downed College of St. Benilde, 27-25, 25-23, 25-20, on Thursday in the 88th NCAA women's volleyball tournament at the Arena in San Juan.
The SSC belles have won seven of eight games, matching the 7-1 records of early semifinalists Emilio Aguinaldo College and defending champion Perpetual Help.
“Lahat ng teams first goal ang makapasok sa Final Four. Medyo masaya pa lang kasi ang pinaka-goal natin ay makapasok sa Finals,” said San Sebastian coach Clint Malazo.
Gretchel Soltones exploded with 24 points, all from attacks, while Jolina Labiano chipped in 11 for San Sebastian.
“On the positive side, maganda kasi rookie tapos ganyan maglaro. Pero ang medyo negative, halos lahat ng puntos sa kanya, mabuti sana kung hindi napapagod. Puwedeng mapagod, baka kapag nagkagipitan maubos pero sana hindi umabot sa ganoon,” said Malazo of Soltones.
Rossan Fajardo and Jannine Navarro came up with 14 and 13 markers, respectively, for CSB. The Lady Blazers slid to joint fourth place with Arellano University and San Beda College at 5-3.
In the other game, Letran whipped Lyceum, 23-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-19.
Melissa Cu finished with 17 points, from 10 hits, one block and six service aces, Mikaela Lopez added 13 and Sarah Jane Espelita had 11 points for the Lady Knights.
Jhemil Abadilla finished with 19 points, Gian Carla Benedicto came away with 17 markers, and Kailyn Penamante added 10 for the Lady Pirates, who ended the tournament with a 2-7 win-loss card.
