VISAYAN teams Bacolod Tay Tung and Leyte National High School took down separate foreign teams to kick off their respective Pool B campaigns on a high note in the opening day of Rebisco Volleyball League National Championship Girls 18-and-under on Saturday at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
Leyte National High School overcame a height disadvantage and tight second-set battle before sweeping the much-taller Z-Air Maori of New Zealand, 25-20, 29-27.
Bacolod Tay Tung also upset a foreign guest team as it routed Malaysia’s Sarawak Under 18 squad, 25-9, 25-7.
Also in Pool B, Holy Rosary College trounced St. Alexius College in two sets, 25-15, 25-10.
Meanwhile, NCR champion Kings’ Montessori kicked off its title quest in pool A with a convincing 25-8, 25-19 over Northern Luzon titlist Holy Family Academy.
Cagayan De Oro National High School also won its first game in Pool A beating University of Mindanao Tagum College, 25-22, 25-21.
Kings’ Montessori and Cagayan De Oro National High School will clash for second win in Pool on Sunday at 6 p.m.
Other Pool A squads Hawaii U18 volleyball team and Central Visayas champion University of San Jose Recolletos will debut also on Sunday in separate matches against Holy Family Academy (0-1) at 4 p.m and University of Mindanao Tagum College (0-1) at 3 p.m., respectively.
Bacolod Tay Tung and Leyte National High School will gun for their second win in Pool B against St. Alexius College (0-1) at 2 p.m. and Sarawak-Malaysia (0-1) at 5 p.m., respectively.
