‘TALAGANG pakamatay na (sa Sabado).’
That was the vow of National University coach Roger Gorayeb, two days before hid Lady Bulldogs take on La Salle in a sudden-death match for a place in the UAAP women's volleyball finals.
NU erased the second-seeded Lady Spikers’ twice-to-beat edge in the stepladder finals after a surprisingly easy, 25-20, 25-20, 25-19, win at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Wednesday, setting the stage for a do-or-die match on Saturday.
The winner of the 4 p.m. match at the Mall of Asia Arena will take on Gorayeb's former team Ateneo, which gained an outright finals place and thrice-to-beat advantage after a sweep of the two-round eliminations.
“Sa Sabado ganoon pa rin, ‘yun ang do-or-die. Talagang pakamatay na,” said Gorayeb. “The girls will do their best and I will also do my best. You have to prepare talaga the girls.”
After seeing the Lady Bulldogs beat La Salle for the first time since 2008, Gorayeb said he is proud of what his wards have achieved in just two months under his mentorship, regardless the result of Saturday's match.
“Whatever happens, proud na ako sa mga players ko. Proud na ako na in two months time ay nagawa nila ang gusto kong mangyari sa kanila,” he said.
