ROGER Gorayeb was quick to shrug off talks of 'revenge' against rival Ramil de Jesus, stressing that the UAAP battle between National University and La Salle is about the teams and not the coaches.
Gorayeb had battled De Jesus numerous times in Ateneo-La Salle volleyball showdowns a few seasons ago, and is back in the spotlight this time as mentor of the surging NU Lady Bulldogs.
The Lady Bulldogs defeated the Lady Spikers in a showdown that was billed as a Gorayeb-De Jesus rematch, but the former explained that it is not his personal goal to beat the latter.
“Hindi kasi ’yun eh, it’s not my personal wish na talunin sila,” he said. “Team ito eh, ke anong team ako nandoon sa UAAP kailangan mo talunin ’yung kalaban eh.”
“Pag sinabi kasi na ano pag-aawayin na naman kami, pag-iinitin lang kaya wala na, wala na tayo sa ganoon, nakalipas na ’yun,” he said.
Gorayeb lost to La Salle in two straight finals in 2012 and 2013 when he was Ateneo head coach but stressed that while he remembers the games, he does not keep a scoreboard of their head-to-head matchup.
“Ok lang ’yun hindi ko na binibilang kung tinalo ko si Ramil o hindi ang tinitignan ko kasi ang laro ng mga bata kung maganda ba, kung nagagawa nila ang gusto ko,” Gorayeb told Spin.ph.
“Wala eh noong nasa Ateneo ako natalo ko rin siya,” he added, referring to as the Lady Eagles with the Fab Four – Fille Cainglet, Gretchen Ho, Dzi Gervacio and Jem Ferrer with Alyssa Valdez, won over La Salle in the Game One of the Finals in Season 74.
NU and La Salle meet again on Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena for right to face top-seeded Ateneo, which earned an outright finals spot and a thrice-to-beat advantage after completing a 14-match sweep of the eliminations.
