NATIONAL University coach Roger Gorayeb is hoping his intensity rubs off on his wards when they face a must-win game against University of Santo Tomas in the UAAP Season 79 women’s volleyball tournament on Saturday at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Lady Bulldogs (7-6) will be trying to forge a three-way tie with UST and Far Eastern University for the third to fifth places - and force a playoff for a Final Four spot with the Tigresses (8-5).
Gorayeb vowed to bring his aggressive style to the sidelines, and hopes NU will follow suit.
“Kailangan talaga. Ayaw ko ng ganyang sitwasyon, namamaybay kami,” said Gorayeb.
“Agresibo ako masyado. Sila hindi, hindi kami talaga mag-tugma. Gigil na gigil ako palagi kasi alam kong kaya nila eh,” he added. “(Pero) wala, half-hearted ang kilos nila.”
After their stunning win over Ateneo, 17-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-21, 15-13, NU lost to University of the Philippines in four sets followed by a straight-set loss to Far Eastern University in its next outing.
The outspoken coach was left clueless on the Lady Bulldogs’ lackluster performance.
“Hindi ko alam kung bakit sila nagko-collapse. Para silang batang maliliit, na pag nalaglagan ng candy, naiyak sila,” said Gorayeb.
The former national team coach urged his wards to help each other and not just rely on team captain Jaja Santiago.
“Ganoon ang mga nangyayari na eh (too dependent kay Jaja),” he said. “We cannot win with Jaja alone. We cannot. It should be a work of all the players eh. The success of one is the success of everybody.”
