THE Philippine Volleyball Federation (PVF) begins its overhaul of the national teams for men and women in preparation for the Asian Men's Club Championships to be held in the San Juan and Pasig on April 8-16, and the Asian Women's Club Championships set in Nakhonpathom, Thailand on April 15-23.
It will be the first time two Philippine volleyball teams are competing in international competitions after several years of absence following a revamp of the PVF leadership.
The PVF, according to secretary general Otie Camangian, has invited players who have seen action in the various collegiate leagues and those who have played in the recent Philippine Superliga Open and Grand Prix competitions for the men's pool.
Actor-sportsman Richard Gomez, an outside spiker, has expressed his intention to join the tryouts after his stint in the Superliga's maiden men's tournament.
Tryouts for the men's team are set on January 15, 18 and 19, from 6-9 pm, at The Arena in San Juan.
Collegiate players are also welcome to join the tryouts for the women's pool while top players who have seen action in the previous PSL conference have also been invited.
First date of the women's tryouts is on January 17 from 7-10 pm at the Emilio Aguinaldo College gym in UN, Manila. Another tryout will be held on January 19 (2-5 pm) in a venue to be announced later.
The tryouts will be supervised by the PVF in coordination with the sponsoring PLDT-Fibr and Score, which runs the PSL.
Those who have signified intention to join the tryouts for the women's team are spikers Rachel Ann Daquis and Jovelyn Gonzaga of TMS-Army, Angela Benting, Suzanne Roces and Laurence Anna Latigay of PLDT-myDSL, Angelique Tabaquero, and Aiza Maizo Pontillas of Cagayan Valley and Danika Yolanda Grendauli of Cignal.
Others expected to join are: Setters Relea Ferina Saet of Cagayan Valley and Christina Sala of TMS-Army; Blockers Maureen Ouano of Cignal, Michelle Laborte of Petron, Mary Jean Balse of TMS-Army and Ma. Paulina Soriano of Cagayan Valley; and liberos Lizlee Ann Pantone of PLDT-MyDSL, Angelique Dionela of Cignal, and Jennelyn Reyes of Cagayan Valley.
For the men's team, spikers Salvador Depante III, JP Torres and Edjet Mabbayad of Gilligan’s; Dominico Lucindo Alnasip Laja, Kheeno Franco, Jayson Ramos and Henry Pecana of PLDT-MyDSL; and Angelo Espiritu, Andre Pareja and Chris Macasaet of Systema have also signified intention to join the pool.
Also taking part are liberos Gilbert Longavela of PLDT-MyDSL, Jay Chua of Gilligans, Rhenze Edmund Hu of Systema; and setter Christian Fernandez of Gilligan’s.
