RICHARD Gomez has been tapped as the country’s chief of mission for the 2014 Asian Beach Games, adding to the growing list of roles the actor-sportsman has had in sports.
Philippine Olympic Committee first vice president Joey Romasanta confirmed that Gomez has been tapped to lead the country’s preparation for the event set November 14 to 21 in Phuket, Thailand.
“Magandang pagkakataon ito para kay Mr. Gomez,” said Romasanta in the POC’s weekly radio program interview over Sports Radio 918 AM.
“Bagay na bagay para kay Mr. Gomez dahil karamihan sa mga sports diyan ay mga leisure sports,” Romasanta added.
Gomez has a deep involvement in sports, having been a member of national teams in four different sports, most recently with the Power Pinoys that saw action in the Asian Men’s Club Championships hosted by the Philippines. He had previously played for the national teams of fencing, shooting, and rowing.
The actor-sportsman is also currently the president of the Philippine Fencing Association and was once an adviser for sports under former president Joseph Estrada.
Among the sports that are being played in the Asian Beach Games are beach volleyball, beach football, 3-on-3 basketball, and watersports events.
