UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas coach Kungfu Reyes cited lack of consistency and agressiveness for his sporadic use of top blocker Ria Meneses in the Tigresses' campaign in the UAAP Season 79 women’s volleyball tournament.
Meneses has been mostly in and out of games since Reyes took over the reins for the Tigresses - unusual for the only UST player named to the national pool.
It was no different in the game against La Salle on Wednesday afternoon, when the Meneses started for the Tigresses but spent a long spell on the bench before being fielded back with the team down two sets to none and 16-17 in the third set.
UST, which won six of its seven previous games, ended up losing, 23-25, 22-25, 21-25.
“Oo, suma tutal ang mga best blocker namin, walang na block kahit papaano so ‘yun ang naging problema namin,” said Reyes when asked about his benching of Meneses.
“Si Ria, sabi nga, hindi naman laging maganda ang laro. This time, napunta siya doon sa hindi ka-aggressive na laro today,” said Reyes. “I don’t know kung may nararamdaman siya. Siguro off lang talaga ang pwede natin sabihin.”
The Tigresses had only one block courtesy of EJ Laure in the entire match and Reyes made no effort to hide his disappointment on the play of Meneses, who was also recently recruited by rebuilding Super Liga side Petron.
“Kasi nandoon naman siya, nagba-block naman siya, wala lang siya nahahawakan, hindi siya makatapat, pero andoon naman siya nakaka-service naman siya,” he added.
UST is on a must-win situation on its next two games and will face University of the Philippines on Sunday and National University on April 8.
