FAR Eastern University survived gritty University of the Philippines, 27-25, 21-25, 25-22, 20-25, 15-12, on Sunday in the UAAP Season 78 women’s volleyball tournament at the MOA Arena.
Toni Rose Basas and Bernadeth Pons scored 21 points apiece, skipper Mary Palma added 13 and Heather Guino-o chipped in 10 markers as the Lady Tamaraws improved their win-loss record to 3-2 for a share of the third spot with National University.
Despite the scare, FEU coach Shaq de los Santos said theit first five-setter of the season should help them improve.
FEU took a 6-1 lead in the fifth with a Palma service ace before UP trimmed the deficit to 6-8.
It was again a tight battle from there as Kathy Bersola scored on back-to-back quick attacks to help UP make it 8-10, but FEU capitalized on the Lady Maroons’ errors to make it 12-9.
Bersola scored 18 points for UP, which suffered its third loss in five matches, sharing fifth spot with University of Santo Tomas.
“Si Basas naman medyo nalungkot ako at the start of the season kasi may injury siya sa pero ngayon medyo nakakarecover na siya hindi pa 100 percent pero good thing nagdedeliver siya,” he added.
Isa Molde scored 17 points, Diana Carlos added 15 points and Justine Dorog chipped in with 11 for UP.
