ATENEO stalwarts Rex Intal, Marck Espejo and Ish Polvorosa showed up for the first day of practice of the Philippine Under-23 men's team competing in the Asian Volleyball Championships next month, but there were several no-shows.

Joining the Ateneo trio at the Blue Eagle Gym were teammates Josh Villanueva, Isay Marasigan, and libero Manuel Sumanggit. Also present were University of Santo Tomas spiker Romnick Rico and San Beda player Angelo Torres.

On the other hand, Far Eastern University coach Kid Santos assured that Greg Dolor will join the team set to compete in Myanmar from May 12 to 20.

National University standout Peter Torres, meanwhile, didn't show up on Monday night but gave an assurance that he wants to be part of the team while others who were invited didn’t bother to reply at all.

“Si Peter Torres vocal siya na he really wants to play for the national team konting hintay lang daw pero he really wants to play,” said coach Oliver Almadro.

Bonjomar Castel of Perpetual Help, Vince Mangulabnan of National University, Howard Mojica of Emilio Aguinaldo College, and Jonvic de Guzman of College of St. Benilde were also invited but were no shows during the practice.

"Invited pa rin naman si Bonjomar Castel,” Almadro said.

Vince Mangulabnan I really want him (to be in the team), but he's not replying kung gusto niya talaga o ayaw,” he added.

“Howard Mojica and Jonvic de Guzman they already talked to their coaches, but I don't know kung anong usapan nila ng coaches nila,” Almadro said.

The Ateneo coach, who steered the Blue Eagles to their first ever UAAP men's title in Season 77, was left with no choice but to make do with what he has.

“'Yung iba kasi we invited them but they opted to keep quiet so I guess silence is wala eh. Ano eh, hindi namin masabi,” said Almadro.

“So we have to move on kasi we're running out of time. Ngayon ang kailangan pagtuunan ng pansin is mag-practice na,” he added. “So given this lineup, we'll work hard kung anong meron tayo. Sanay naman tayo (being a) Filipino find a way, make a way.”
