IT’S the day most collegiate volleyball fans are waiting for — the beginning of the new season of the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament.
The court action is slated to begin at 2 in the afternoon, but if the opener itself is not enough to get you excited for the whole season, here are a couple of reasons why you should be tuning in:
Ateneo Lady Eagles-National University Lady Bulldogs faceoff in opener
Among the scheduled games in Season 78’s opener is the match between defending UAAP volleyball champs Ateneo Lady Eagles and archrival NU Lady Bulldogs. Their rivalry is expected to continue this season, especially with the fan favorites’ excellent track record in other leagues last year.
Will the Alyssa Valdez-led squad gain a three-peat? Or will Lady Bulldogs star Jaja Santiago and her teammates finally get their long-awaited turn to seize the championship? The opener might serve as a good preview.
The return of La Salle star Ara Galang
Last year’s UAAP women’s volleyball season had a heartbreaking end for the De La Salle Lady Spikers and their supporters. Not only did the team lose to Ateneo — which completed a season sweep — in the finals, Lady Spikers team captain Ara Galang didn’t even get to play because of her injuries.
But all hopes are high that the star scorer will be making her comeback in season 78. That’s one thing you do not want to miss.
Rise of new stars
With a lot of UAAP volleyball veterans playing their last year this season, the room for rising stars has gotten bigger… so be on the lookout for emerging talent.
Some names to watch out for this season include University of the Philippines Lady Maroons’ Kathy Bersola and Adamson Lady Falcons’ Mylene Paat.
