AIR Force-powered squads gun for the solo lead in the men’s and women’s divisions as Super Liga action resumes on Wednesday at the Cuneta Astrodome.
RC Cola-Air Force eyes its third win in as many matches as the Raiders take on Cagayan Valley in the 2 p.m. women’s match in the All Filipino Conference.
The Raiders share the top spot with idle AirAsia and Petron at 2-0.
PLDT-Air Force, meanwhile, tries to grab sole possession of the top spot in the men’s division as it takes on co-leader Cignal HD at 6 p.m.
The Raiders, who finished in the bottom of the standings in the Super Liga Grand Prix last year, have yet to drop a set in two matches and enter the game as favorites over the Rising Suns, who are coming off a win after three losses.
But Raiders coach and former University of Santo Tomas standout Clarence Esteban warned his players, led by Judy Ann Caballejo, Maika Ortiz and Joy Cases, against complacency.
“Down sila kaya gusto nila manalo sa susunod na laban," said Esteban about the Lady Rising Suns, who are in fifth spot.
“Maganda naman ang nilalaro nila sa mga nakaraan nilang games nauunahan lang sila na maka-25 ng kalaban,” he added.
Cagayan Valley has an impressive lineup featuring Angeli Tabaquero, Aiza Maizo-Pontillas, Janine Marciano and Pau Soriano, but the players took a while before pulling off a win, snapping their skid with a four-set win over Generika-Army.
The Power Attackers and the HD Spikers, the men’s division co-leaders at 2-0, part ways in the lone men’s match.
Led by national team members who helped the Philippine team place seventh in the recent Asian Men's Club Championship, the Power Attackers won a four-setter over last conference’s runner-up Systema and a straight-sets win over newcomer Estetico Manila.
Ranran Abdilla, JP Torres, Ron Jay Galang, Jeffrey Malabanan, libero Raffy Mosuela, and veteran setters Ian Fernandez and Jessie Lopez look to pull PLDT to the solo lead, but they could be in for a tough match against a Cignal squad led by former NCAA standouts.
Jay dela Cruz, Gilbert Ablan and Howard Mojica led the HD Spikers to victories over Systema and Via Mare.
Meanwhile, two-time champion Generika-Army and back-to-back runner up Cignal try to get their first win as they collide at 4 p.m.
The Lady Troopers and the HD Spikers, are in unfamiliar territory, at the bottom of the pack with 0-2 win-loss cards.
The Army led by Jovelyn Gonzaga, Rachel Anne Daquis and Nene Bautista are coming off a four-set loss to lowly Cagayan Valley, while the Cignal squad featuring Honey Royse Tubino, Danika Gendrauli and Aby Praca resume their campaign after a 10-day break following a loss to RC Cola.
